Mixing

We balance drums, bass, instruments and vocals into one coherent picture — with clear communication, structured delivery and revisions within agreed limits.

Mixing is where separate recordings become a song: levels, panning, EQ, compression, sends and effects share one logic. At Mordancyedge we mix material recorded here and stems sent from elsewhere when files are technically usable.

Engineer Sanne Meijer handles mix and mastering; capture may have happened via vocal recording or demo recording. Read deliver stems for mixing before you upload, and see all services for rates beyond mix.

Quotes are bespoke: track count, complexity and deadline drive the fee. Site prices are indicative incl. 21% VAT. We reply within 2 business days via contact. 2 revision rounds are included unless stated otherwise; extra rounds follow terms and conditions.

Process

  1. 01

    Inventory

You send stemmed WAV files, tempo, references and a short note on vibe. We check for clicks, clipping and missing tracks.

  2. 02

    Rough balance

First pass: drums and bass as foundation, vocals forward where needed, space for guitars and keys. You get a listen version within the agreed turnaround.

  3. 03

    Detail and revision

Automation, effects and micro-edits. You give written feedback; we work through 2 rounds with concrete points per track.

  4. 04

    Export

Final mix as WAV, plus optional instrumental or TV mix when included in the quote.

When mixing makes sense

Your home rough mix is close but lacks depth, punch or consistency across songs? You finished vocal recording here and want one contact for the next step? Or you tracked in the live room via demo recording and need phase and room control? Mixing addresses that.

Mix is not mastering: we deliver a full stereo mix ready for mastering, not final platform loudness. For both, plan both services and read streaming loudness targets before distribution.

Delivery formats and naming

Send 24-bit WAV, all tracks from the same start point, without a limiter squashing the master bus of your export. Name consistently, e.g. Song_Instrument. Avoid mp3 unless it is all you have — we discuss risks upfront.

Our stems guide covers zip layout, sample rate and track lists. Incomplete delivery delays the clock: turnaround starts from complete usable files per terms and conditions.

Workflow in the control room

Mix happens in our control room in Amsterdam-Oost on a 145 m² facility, on monitoring tuned for neutral decisions — not “loud as if finished”, but translating to headphones and small speakers. We work on nearfields and spot-check on a second pair where useful.

Reference tracks help: two or three songs in a similar genre, not to clone but to aim bass, vocal presence and drum attack. Too many references at once blur direction; pick your strongest examples.

Revisions and feedback

2 revision rounds are included after the first mix presentation. Bundle feedback in one email: timestamps or bar numbers, “warmer vocal in chorus”, “quieter hi-hat”, beats scattered voice notes without context.

Extra rounds beyond the quote may be billed at €88 or a fixed fee per round. Major arrangement changes (new stems, new structure) are a new job, not a revision. Project archive: 24 months.

Turnaround

A standard single mix usually starts within a few business days after complete delivery, depending on the calendar. EPs are blocked so sound stays consistent song to song. Rush is sometimes possible for a surcharge — ask via contact.

Studio hours for on-site review: Monday–Friday 10:00–19:00, Saturday 11:00–17:00. Closed on Sunday. Sessions outside these hours on request.. Remote mix runs on upload and email; you do not need to attend unless you want an attended session at studio hourly rates.

Not included

Mastering, heavy vocal editing beyond normal mix cleanup, time-alignment of poorly prepared recordings, sample clearance, distribution to Spotify or Apple Music, and recording missing parts are outside standard mix. Building a track from scratch without multitracks is not a mix service.

Need new vocals? Book vocal recording. For spoken dialogue see podcast recording. Legal framework: terms and conditions and privacy policy.

Link with mastering

After mix we export stereo WAV without heavy limiting. Mastering adds consistent loudness, finishing EQ and album sequence. If you only buy mix, you receive a mix that can be mastered elsewhere — say if you want headroom for an external master.

FAQ

Can I send Logic or Ableton sessions?

Stemmed WAV per track is preferred for compatibility. Session files only by agreement; plugins must match or you bounce on your side. See deliver stems for mixing.

How many tracks per song?

No fixed cap, but very large sessions (30+ tracks) are quoted with extra hours. Tell us track count and vocal layers in the quote request.

Can I attend the mix?

Attended sessions are available by appointment at €88 or a half-day rate in the quote. Remote is common and often faster for revisions.

What if stems are out of sync?

Small fixes may fit in mix time; structural issues need editing or re-recording. We flag it before starting so you can choose.
